The pictures you see here do not really do justice to the experience of actually being there in person. The interior photographs are bright because I have a decent camera for my real estate practice, and because I used a flash inside my house. It was actually dark and gloomy inside and the terrible stench was unbearable. I wore a tight-fitting face mask with a rubber gasket and a filter.
My former home as it looked in the Spring of 2004...
...and as it looked in January 2006, 5 months after Katrina. The
flood water, at its highest point, reached just above the windows!
Me, in my back yard, on my first of many visits back to my home
1 month after Katrina. The strong winds evidently blew down the
very heavy satellite dish. It then slammed into my house, which
was bouyant in the flood water, and pushed the rear off of the
foundation. (Notice the position of the house compared to the
cinderblocks.) The front corner of the house was held in place by
the telephone cables going out to the utility poles in front.
This photo, of the other side of my house, also shows how much
it moved. That's my travel trailer in the neighbor's yard! I left it in
my driveway beside the house. When the house got shoved over
by the satellite dish, it in turn pushed the camper, which the
floated OVER the fence, and settled in my neighbor's side yard.
My kitchen as it appeared on my first visit back to my home. My
rolled, black yoga mat floated down the hall from my bedroom
and ended up on top of my kitchen table. The kitchen garbage
can was two rooms over in my guest bedroom. Fortunately, the
fridge flipped on its back and the doors stayed closed, so there
was no rotting food to deal with on the kitchen floor.
My kitchen 4 months later, after I had cleaned it up a bit. Even
though other things floated around the house, my toaster oven,
blender base, and toaster were still side-by-side on the counter
above the dishwasher, right where I always kept them. Even the
dish cloth and dish towel were still hanging on the rack above the
sink and the room was submerged to the ceiling!

My Guest Bedroom
A spare bedroom I used as my home office. This was taken on
January 28, 2006 AFTER I had cleaned it up a bit.
The ceiling in my home office. The flood water evidently came up
just enough to soak the ceilings and make them fall, but did not
flood the attic. It was completely dry and everything I had stored
up there was fine. If only I had put more up there.
More unbelievable photographs of the devastated areas around my immediate neighborhood.
